August was another good month for dividend investors, the reporting of Canadian Banks quarterly earnings did not disappoint despite the media pessimism prior to the earnings being released.

All of the bank shares that we own had decent results and we were rewarded with pay rises from two of them, for doing absolutely nothing!

Brookfield Infrastructure the global infrastructure giant continued to have solid earnings and is on an acquisition spree which will hopefully continue to shower us with increasing long term earnings and increasing dividends.

Lets hope September will be another good month.

The summer would not have been complete without another last minute dirt cheap trip back to Mexico for some boogie boarding and R&R.

This time we stayed a little further up the coast in Bucerias, which is north of Peurto Vallarta.

We quite like the area, although we didn’t do much beside boogie board and swim with the kids all day. I love Mexico and can see spending a couple months there every winter once the kids are grown up.

Further up the coast the waves and beaches are much nicer but the town doesn’t have as much to offer as Peurto Vallarta.

We also stopped in Just Smiles again for some heavily discounted dental check-up’s, at least compared to what we would pay in Calgary.

The clinic was at most a 10 minute walk from the resort and maybe 5 minutes from a nearby HSBC to get some pesos.

This time we just had some cleanings and minor work done. I had a cleaning and two fillings, my wife had the same, our daughter had a cleaning and a filling and my son just had a cleaning. This time we went to their satellite location in Bucerias and saw a different dentist.

How much did we spend at the dentist?

Again, not much as you can see from my invoice.

just-smilesHow was the experience at the different location? I would describe it as clinical. The dentist was friendly and professional but not at all chatty.

We discussed the experience after as a family once we got back to the resort and agreed that next year we will take the bus into Peurto Vallarta and see Dr González, not that the work was any different but rather how good she was with the kids. Her English was better and she spent more time explaining procedures prior to any work commenced. Plus, its always nice to spend a 1/2 day along the Malecon walking around the shops with the kids and eating ice cream.

After Mexico is was time for another trip to Funcouver with a stop in Salmon Arm along the way to eat my bodyweight in fresh Okanogan fruit from Pedros fresh farm and fruit stand.

In Funcouver we spent time visiting family, days on the beach, a whitecaps soccer camp for the kids and lots of hikes around the north shore mountains, like the Lynn Canyon suspension bridge trail network.

Overall, it was another fun summer, but sadly all good things come to an end and the kids need to get back to school.
